Perseverance is a fictionalized story based on the life of William Leidesdorff, widely considered one of the first black millionaires and a founding father of California. 

I received the book as a Christmas gift from my wife after we learned about Leidesdorff during a walking tour of downtown San Francisco that we took while in the Bay Area for my birthday.
